55 years of KHCB

This month KHCB-FM celebrates 55 years of sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ to the Houston area.

KHCB began through the diligent efforts of a group of concerned Christians burdened to reach the growing Houston area with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Several years were spent praying and also in negotiations with the FCC before a license was granted to operate non-commercial Christian radio in the Houston/Galveston area. The ministry of Missionary Radio has grown to forty-four different outlets with several other applications pending. The first radio transmissions started on the FM band on March 9, 1962 at 10:30 PM.

A few months after going on the air, KHCB-FM initiated a very important help to the ministry in which volunteers took over KHCB’s operations on weeknights and weekends. This gave many believers the opportunity of helping with the ministry while keeping the budget at a minimum. Volunteers also took over the preparation of program schedules for mailing. These helpers continue to play a vital role in the operation of all stations.

KHCB has never sold broadcast time or commercial spots, and has never charged programmers for use of airtime on the station. The Lord provides the necessary income for daily operation entirely from the gifts of listeners. Because of the Lord’s provision, KHCB has been completely debt free since 1969.

In February 1991 God moved to allow Galveston AM 1400 to be added to the KHCB Radio Network. It began as a Spanish outreach ministry, but in June of 1991 expanded to include Chinese programming on weekends. Radio Amistad now has 9 outlets in Texas and one in Florida.

All English Network programming originates at KHCB-FM Houston. It is then relayed via satellite to stations all across Texas and into Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Florida. The first addition came in the form of a translator in Bryan/College Station in June of 1994. From there God placed 33 more stations and translators into the KHCB family. (See page 4 for the listing of stations.)

KHCB’s Christian message extends to people all over the world via the Internet on KHCB’s home page www.khcb.org and by way of KHCB’s free app for smart phones and tablets. KHCB’s facebook page also reaches those who enjoy using social media.

Please pray for the Trustees and for the expanding outreach of KHCB around the world. As Jesus said in John 4:35, “Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.” Pray that the Lord would continually guide and give wisdom to lead the station according to His Will.
