Houston Antenna Replacement Project

Houston Antenna UPDATE September 2013: The antenna is currently being built and two studies are being conducted. One study is to show that the weight of the antenna can be supported by the tower structure. This is a routine load study and is necessary because the new antenna is of a different type than the current antenna. However, it should be readily handled by the stoutness of the tower.

The second study is done by the manufacturer where modeling of the antenna is done at the test range, so that it can be proved it will perform at the desired maximum rating and give the predicted amount of coverage.

The antenna is being manufactured in Indiana. Once the tests are finished and the antenna is approved, it will be shipped to Houston . After the hardware arrives the existing antenna will be removed allowing for the installation of the new one. Bruce Munsterman will provide updates on “Sincerely Yours” as the work moves forward.

On Easter Sunday of this year, the computer monitoring equipment for 105.7FM in Houston alerted the staff that there was a loss of air pressure in the antenna. Many high powered radio station antennas and associated coaxial cable are hollow and the air inside needs to remain dry so that moisture doesn't develop within the structure. If enough water condensation collects inside the antenna, an electrical short might occur and that would cause damage and prevent the station from broadcasting.

The antenna had a developed a leak and the air that was supposed to be stored inside to keep the antenna dry was escaping. A tower crew was hired to find the leak and try to repair it. After several days of climbing through this 100ft long apparatus, they determined that there was more to the leak than just a hole, but the antenna itself was deteriorating rapidly and the repairs made would be temporary. This antenna was installed in 1985 and with the Gulf Coast climate the wear and tear of the atmosphere has caused the fixture to reach the end of its expected life. The Lord has graciously preserved the KHCB-FM antenna for more than 28 years!

The flagship station at 105.7FM in Houston installed this antenna when the Lord allowed KHCB-FM to begin broadcasting from one television station's 2000 foot tower that was built in 1984. This new operation was from a height more than four times greater than its original location back then. The ministry leases space at the 1600 foot level on this 2000 foot tower. To give a perspective, that height is twice as tall as one of the tallest buildings in Houston (the Williams/Transco Tower in the Galleria area). This point on the tower is roughly 100 feet taller than the John Hancock building in Chicago! This incredible level has allowed KHCB-FM to reach out to Southeast Texas in an almost 80-100 mile radius!

After considering the options, the staff and Board of Trustees believe the best course of action is to replace the antenna with a new one. The goal is to begin work on this soon since the hurricane season 'starts' this month and Gulf Coast weather becomes more unpredictable. There is some sense of urgency as we do not want the old antenna to have a catastrophic failure and force 105.7FM off the air. There is an emergency broadcasting site that can be used temporarily, but has constraints that require a huge reduction in power and thus coverage.

The Board of Trustees set up an Antenna Fund with the goal of $100,000 in order to cover all the expenses including the purchase of a new antenna and the labor to remove the current (old) antenna and the installation of the new one. God has graciously allowed KHCB to meet the financial goal. This separate fund will be used to pay for the replacement over and above the normal monthly expenses. All gifts given to the fund are tax deductible. Please pray with us that God will supply this need so that KHCB can continue to broadcast in Southeast Texas with the Word of God and help to “Keep Him Close By”. If you have any questions about this please call the staff and we would be happy to visit with you.
